Innovating the Stage: How Students Bring Original Works to Life

October 4, 2024

"Emma Ventresca ’26 is one of the writers and directors of the original musical Laid Off. Teaming up with her brother, she has written quite a few original shows.

'We weren’t satisfied with what Broadway was putting out, what mainstream theater culture was,' she explained.

With this in mind, the two set off to write a show that would resonate with ardent theatergoers and novices alike.

The Ventrescas have been crafting these characters [in Laid Off] for years now. They hope their shows will be produced regionally, fulfilling their aspiration to make their mark on theater culture."

Guest Curator Recommends...

"Want something you create to last forever in an increasingly forgetful world? Me too. Come to this reading of a student-written, student-produced musical "set in the chaos and comedy of university life." Watch a piece of the process of putting together a theater production written for, by, and about students, and examine some philosophical quandaries akin to those presented by Prometheus and Frankenstein."

ICYMI: A Princeton Stage, Transformed Into a Small Gaucho Town in 19th Century Argentina

"It would seem quite difficult to recreate on a Princeton stage the lives of inhabitants of the small gaucho town of San Antonio de Areco, Argentina. But Ventresca and his fellow players succeeded in doing so through the production's music, which combined Argentine folk music, Latino pop, and musical theater. augmented by the acting, dialog, stage settings, and costumes."
